michele nardiello is a multifaceted artist whose career represents a constant dialogue between ancient artisanal mastery and contemporary pictorial research.
Born in Gravina di Puglia (Bari), his artistic journey unfolds from his Apulian roots to flourish in centers of artistic excellence and beyond Italy’s borders.
Training between ceramics and sculpture
His artistic calling manifested itself early, leading him to graduate from the State Art Institute of Bari, specializing in ceramics. A crucial step in his education was his first year at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, followed by another three years at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, where he graduated.
During his formative years in Carrara, nardiello went beyond the traditional academic curriculum; he enthusiastically participated in special courses that broadened his cultural horizons, studying with prestigious masters such as Silvio Coppola, Bruno Munari, and Getulio Alviani (in the field of design), and deepening his knowledge of graphic design.
This solid multidisciplinary foundation allows him to define himself as an “artisan of art,” capable of operating with impeccable technique in everything from ceramics to graphics, from painting to design.
In 1980, after a period of collaboration with leading studios in Milan, where he created backdrops for television commercials and sculptures for a film on Canale 5, exploring techniques such as airbrushing, nardiello developed a deep passion for restoration, acquiring knowledge of the ancient and complex technique of graffito.
Milan represented a turning point in michele nardiello‘s artistic career, marked by the creation of his first trompe-l’œil in 1982, for a Milanese artist in a private home, featuring complex perspectives. This technique, the art of deceiving the eye, would become one of his hallmarks, allowing him to create illusory depths in both interior and exterior spaces, demonstrating a rare mastery of perspective and light.
michele nardiello lived for many years in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. There, he carried out several restorations and impressive trompe-l’oeil paintings, examples of which are visible in public spaces. His art gallery gradually expanded with works ranging from portraits, landscapes, and copies of the great masters, demonstrating an insatiable curiosity and constant technical research.
His incessant “challenge” to the geniuses of the past, as evidenced in his “homage to caravaggio”, to “leonardo da vinci”, and others, where he masterfully reproduced several works, confirms his position as an artist who combines fidelity to classical tradition with a profoundly innovative spirit.
Caravaggio preparation
The emotional and artistic connection to the city of Volterra has taken on a significant role not only as a stage in michele nardiello’s life journey, but also as an emotional refuge and source of artistic inspiration during a particularly significant period.
Beginning in September 2022, following the passing of his wife mariella, and following unmistakable signals from beyond that the artist perceived as an invitation to move to Volterra, nardiello identified the Tuscan city as a place of comfort and healing. As he himself stated, Volterra has proven to be a “beneficial balm” for his heart and his sensibilities.
Volterra and mariella as inspiring muses
This historic city, rich in artistic and cultural heritage, held a special fascination for the artist, offering him an ideal context to transform pain into new creativity.
In march 2024, he opened his atelier at via buomparenti 10: numerous informal, material works were born here, transforming michele nardiello into a channel of inspiration from the beyond, from mariella and others.
This period represented a crucial moment in the consolidation of his research, culminating in the exhibition of some of his most significant works in Volterra, including the homage to caravaggio.
The trompe-l'œil technique
Trompe-l’œil (from the French, “trick the eye”) is not a mere decoration for nardiello, but rather the highest expression of his technical mastery and profound knowledge of perspective.
This painting technique aims to generate an optical illusion of three-dimensionality that gives the depicted object a perception of reality, concealing its existence on a two-dimensional surface. The primary intent is to induce the viewer into a perceptual ambiguity between reality and fiction.
For many years, nardiello has dedicated himself to applying this technique not only to restoration but also to the creation of original projects, both interior and exterior. His academic training in sculpture and design has given him a profound understanding of space, light, and geometry, fundamental elements for manipulating visual perception.

This definition is particularly appropriate for trompe-l’œil, as it requires not only a strong creative ability but also rigorous technical discipline, including mastery of the complex perspectives and the dry and fresco painting techniques used in graffiti murals.
Ultimately, his mastery of trompe-l’œil represents the point of convergence between his classical academic training and his relentless quest to overcome the limits of visual representation.
He held an exhibition dedicated to the Axiliumvitae Foundation at Volterra Ricerche, with 70% of the proceeds going to a clinical rehabilitation project.
He also held another exhibition to benefit the foundation, with 50% of the proceeds going to butterlyonlus.org.
While maintaining a primary focus on technique and aesthetics, the decision to dedicate exhibitions to social causes demonstrates an underlying sensitivity to civic responsibility and altruism.
